He lay on the beach with his head buried in the wet sand. The sound of the surf crashing ashore echoed in his ears, making him stir. Raising his head he looked groggily around before he remembered what had happened.
At once he struggled to get onto his feet. Then as if ignited by a sudden surge of energy, he jumped into the frenzied sea. He tried to fight against the stubborn waves that pushed him back to the shore. Outraged by his inability to move ahead, he yelled at the sea.
Accepting defeat, he fell on his knees and pulled his hair in despair. The roaring of the tide drowned his horrendous screams as it pierced the air. He bawled uncontrollably. His tongue tasted salt, but was it his tears or the sea water? It didn’t matter.
His heart sank as he saw the little pail and the spade lying on the beach. Thirty minutes back his two-year-old son was swallowed by the ocean. They were building a sandcastle when an enormous wave came in.
What would he tell his wife, who was waiting for both of them to return? He had promised her that they would be back after an hour. Just in time for lunch. The grief already began to weigh him down. A wave of delirium began to sweep over his head. And now the sea began to grow calmer.
It was too late. His life had already been swept away.
