Devi: The Spiritual Journey of Love" by Prajeet Budhale tells the engrossing story of Tapas, a man whose ambition has no boundaries. Tapas is shown as a vain, egotistical, and self-focused individual who will do anything it takes to accomplish his objectives. But when he meets Durga, during a theater performance, and falls deeply in love with her, his life takes a transcendent turn.
Through this drama, Tapas and Durga take different paths. Tapas finds his soul by breaking free from the mundane routine of his existence, while Durga discovers who she really is. Tapas symbolizes the journey of a soul navigating through the phases of life, encompassing the qualities of Tamas, Rajas, and Sattva.
Prajeet Budhale has given very thoughtful names to the characters in his novel. Tapas, a sanskrit name based on root word Tap which means striving to create the fire of purity within you. Hence, the protagonist here is symbolically named Tapas considering his life journey. Durga appears in Tapas's life to break his Tamas, the darkness in him, and then she reappears as Lakshmi to give him passion or energy to drive towards Sattava, illumination that he achieves in the divine visions of Saraswati while living as a spiritual seeker.
The problems, difficulties, conundrums, and discontent that the main character Tapas encounters in this novel are applicable to every person's experience.
Prajeet Budhale masterfully conveys the idea that people's yearning and discontent originate from a quest for true contentment rather than a desire for material goods. People look for a deeper feeling of fulfillment as worldly pleasures fall short of this need.
Devi: The Spiritual Journey of Love" is a book that explores the transformative power of love while going deeply into the human experience.
